National City, California (September 25, 2020) – A 69-year-old Chula Vista man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday morning in National City, according to authorities.

The deadly accident, which was reported at about 5:40 a.m., happened on State Route 54, just east of Interstate 5 and west of National City Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, a grey Lexus SUV was heading westbound on State Route 54 when, for undetermined reasons, it veered off the roadway and crashed through a fence before it plunged into the Sweetwater River.

The SUV became submerged, the CHP said.

Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and pulled the SUV driver from the water.

The paramedics performed CPR on the man. Despite life-saving measures, the victim did not survive his injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities said the man was the sole occupant of the vehicle. His name was withheld pending notification of family.

All westbound lanes of SR-54 to southbound I-5 were shut down while the crews worked at the scene.

It is undetermined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The CHP is investigating the crash.
