La Verne, California (September 15, 2020) – The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has identified the tow truck driver who died in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in La Verne as Christopher Herrera, 40, of La Habra.

The deadly accident happened at about 9:00 p.m.Monday, September 14 in the eastbound lanes of the Foothill (210) Freeway, just east of Fruit Street.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2012 BMW 528i, driven by Karen D. Floresarrelano, was traveling eastbound in the No. 3 lane on Foothill (210) Freeway when, for unknown reasons, it struck Herrera, who was helping a disabled driver on the right shoulder of the freeway.

Deadly La Verne Hit-and-Run Accident in La Verne

Herrera was declared dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, a video from the crash scene showed Floresarrelano in custody in the back seat of a CHP SUV. Investigators were examining the vehicle, which was stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway and a semi a short distance in front of it.

Authorities determined that Floresarrelano was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. She was eventually arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of DUI.

CHP is investigating the accident.
