Ruben Alvarez Critically Injured in Merced County Accident at Winton Way and Mercedes Avenue
Merced County, California (January 7, 2020) – 18-year-old Ruben Alvarez of Atwater has been identified as one of the two drivers hurt after a Merced County accident, according to authorities.
The collision took place at North Winton Way and Mercedes Avenue at around 11:20 a.m. Monday, January 6.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Alvarez was driving a 1999 Honda Civic eastbound on Merced Avenue when he failed to yield at a stop sign and crashed into a northbound box truck driven by 60-year-old Carmen Ramirez of Winton.
The two cars came to a stop on the front lawn of a nearby home following the crash. The Honda was totaled in the collision while the box truck sustained significant front-end damage.

Alvarez suffered severe injuries and was taken to Modesto Memorial Hospital. Ramirez was transported to Mercy Medical Center for a complaint of pain.
Officials did not suspect alcohol or drugs to be factors in the collision.
An investigation is ongoing.
