National City, California (August 4, 2019) – Five people were injured, one seriously after a traffic accident in National City Sunday afternoon, according to a local news source.

The crash happened at about 4:28 p.m. on Interstate 5.

According to witnesses, the male driver of a minivan was driving erratically while he was entering the freeway from the Main Street on-ramp. That driver swerved, sped up, stopped, then crossed lanes of traffic and struck a Nissan sedan.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and extricated two men and a woman from the wrecked sedan, along with a 4-year-old child.

All the victims, including the driver of the minivan, were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center. Paramedics mentioned that the child had minor injuries.

The names and conditions of the patients at this time were not disclosed.

Southbound traffic backed up following the collision.

The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
