Bicyclist Dies in Ontario Hit-and-Run Crash at Mission Boulevard and Baker Avenue; Julio Tapia Arrested
Ontario, California (July 31, 2019) – A bicyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run motorist early Wednesday morning in an Ontario intersection, police said.
The deadly hit-and-run accident was reported at about 1:10 a.m. in the area of Mission Boulevard and Baker Avenue.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and found the bicyclist on the shoulder of the road. The bicyclist, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene by the responding paramedics.
Julio Tapia Arrested For Hit-and-Run Accident
According to authorities, Julio Tapia, 31, of Ontario, was found inside his damaged car in a parking lot at 1320 S. Baker Avenue. He was bleeding from his head and face, and damage on the vehicle was consistent with evidence found at the scene of the accident.
Tapia was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center with a bail of $250,000, and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
The crash remains under investigation.
