Imperial County, California (March 2, 2021) – At least 13 people are dead and several others are injured after an SUV collided with a big rig in Holtville in Imperial County on Tuesday morning.

The multiple-fatality crash happened on Highway 115 at Norrish Road, about 125 miles south of San Diego near the US-Mexico border.
According to the CHP, the semi-truck was traveling north on Highway 115 when the 1997 Ford Expedition pulled in front of it from Norrish Road. It was not immediately clear whether the SUV ran a stop sign at the intersection or had stooped before pulling into the highway.

13 Killed in Deadly Crash Involving SUV and Big Rig in Imperial County near US-Mexico Border
The authorities confirmed that 12 people died at the scene of the accident. Another person died while receiving treatment at El Centro Regional Medical Center. The driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old from Mexicali, Mexico, was killed in the crash.
The 13 people were killed after a big rig and an SUV collided on a California highway near the US-Mexico border. CHP officials said they believe there were 25 people inside the SUV at the time of the crash.
The victims, ages 20 to 55, were inside the SUV when it was struck by the big rig hauling two trailers. Due to the impact, several people were ejected from the sport utility vehicle and thrown onto the roadway. At least 10 of those killed in the crash have been identified as Mexicans.

According to CHP Chief Omar Watson, the SUV had the driver and front passenger seat only, thus leaving most passengers apparently unrestrained. Chief Watson said crews had to cut the front passenger seat out of the SUV to extricate the passengers.

At least 12 other people were injured in the crash. The injuries ranged from minor to severe including head trauma and fractures. Four patients were airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. One of the four patients was in critical condition. Six other patients were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. The driver of the big rig, a 69-year-old from El Centro sustained moderate injuries.
