San Diego, California (July 31, 2020) – At least one Marine was killed and two others injured in a boat accident near San Clemente Island off the San Diego Coast on Thursday night.

Marine officials said Fifteen Marines and one sailor from Camp Pendleton were inside an amphibious assault vehicle when the accident happened at about 5:45 p.m. July 30.

The team was performing a 15th MEU and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group routine training exercise about 1000 meters off the coast when the vehicle started taking in water.

Rescue Operations to Recover Missing Marines Ongoing off the Coast of San Diego

One marine, whose identity was withheld, was killed in the accident.

Two others were injured and were transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital for treatment in stable conditions.

The authorities said seven marines and a sailor were still missing and search and rescue operations were ongoing.

USS John Finn,  USS San Diego, USS Somerset, three U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopters and multiple small boats from the USS Makin Island, a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour are assisting in the search and rescue operations.
