One Person Dies, Four Hospitalized after Carmel Valley Crash on Interstate 5 at Carmel Valley Road
San Diego, California (June 1, 2021) – A wrong-way head-on crash has claimed the life of one person and left four other people with serious injures early Tuesday morning in the Carmel Valley area, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly accident happened just before 12:50 a.m. on the southbound side of Interstate 5 at Carmel Valley Road, near state Route 56.
CHP said a white sedan was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of the highway when it collided head-on with a silver vehicle and then hit a black pickup.
Deadly Wrong-Way, Head-On Crash in Carmel Valley
Medical personnel responded to the scene and found several people trapped in the wrecked vehicles.
Sadly, a passenger in the white sedan was declared dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Four other people were transported to area hospitals with major injuries. Their condition at this time remained unknown.
The on-ramp from Carmel Valley to southbound Interstate 5 was closed while southbound traffic was diverted to State Route 56. As of 6:00 a.m., all the lanes were reopened to traffic.
Further details regarding the crash were not immediately provided.
The accident remains under investigation.
