19-Year-Old San Jose Woman Killed in Santa Cruz Crash on Highway 1 near Morrissey Boulevard Exit
Santa Cruz, California (April 15, 2021) – A 19-year-old woman from San Jose was killed in an alleged DUI Accident on Wednesday morning in Santa Cruz, authorities said.
The crash occurred at about 1:47 a.m., on April 14, on southbound Highway 1, near Morrissey Boulevard exit.
According to the officials, the crash occurred during a pursuit with the California Highway Patrol, which began north of Dimeo Lane and proceeded through Santa Cruz’s city. The 2004 Toyota Camry, driven by Richard Quihuis Jr., 19, of San Jose, was seen driving at an initial high rate of speed.
Unfortunately, as the vehicle attempted to exit the highway at Morrissey Boulevard, it struck a concrete curb, proceeded forward, and then hit a metal guardrail before catching fire.
San Jose Woman Killed in Crash on Highway 1
Sadly, the 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
Two women, 17 and 19, and another man, 20, all San Jose residents. The 17-year-old front-seat passenger was able to exit the vehicle safely with minor injuries, but arriving officers needed to extricate the male and female backseat occupants. The man received minor injuries.
Quihuis reportedly fled the scene on foot but was apprehended. Quihuis received treatment for minor injuries at Dominican Hospital and was later arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run and felony evading police. He was being held at Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $150,000.
The crash remains under investigation.
