Ruben Sepulveda Injured in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 in Redcrest

Redcrest, California (May 10, 2021) – Ruben Anthony Sepulveda, 52, of Redway, was among two people who were injured early Monday morning following a deadly crash involving a fallen tree south of Redcrest, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

The multi-vehicle crash happened at around 12:35 a.m. on U.S. Highway 101.

As per the CHP report, a white 2011 Kenworth semi-truck hauling an empty milk tank trailer was heading southbound on U.S. Highway 101 within the right lane when it crashed head-on into a large tree that had fallen across the highway.

The semi-truck then traveled across the northbound lanes and veered off the east roadway shoulder before it crashed down an embankment.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 67-year-old Ferndale man, died at the scene. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.

Minutes later, a red 2020 Jeep Cherokee heading northbound on U.S. Highway 101 struck the tree head-on and stopped within the northbound lanes. A white 2017 Toyota Tundra traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101 crashed head-on into the tree and came to rest within the southbound lanes.

A 2018 Ford F-150 heading southbound on U.S. Highway 101 also crashed head-on into the tree and then hit the Toyota. After the impact, the Ford flipped onto its side.

Sepulveda, who was the driver of the Toyota, sustained major injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.

The Ford driver, Mark Allen Taylor, 62, of Fortuna, had minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep, Marc Alexander Reichle of Fresno, did not suffer any injuries.

U.S. Highway 101 was blocked for nearly five hours following the crash. Motorists were being diverted onto State Route 254.

The accident remains under investigation by the CHP- Garberville Area.
