42-Year-Old Man Killed in Modesto Pedestrian Crash on Highway 99 near Hammett Road

Modesto, California (February 15, 2020) – A 42-year-old man was fatally hit by a big rig after he exited his vehicle and entered onto a highway in Modesto Friday morning, the CHP said.
The incident happened on Highway 99 just south of Hammett Road shortly before 9 a.m. on Friday, February 14.
According to CHP, a 42-year-old Modesto man was in a van parked along the east shoulder of the highway when he exited and entered the northbound lanes. The man was then hit by a northbound big rig.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency crews who went to the scene after the crash.
The driver of the big rig was identified as Jatinder Singh, 41, of Ferndale, Washington. He stopped the rig a short distance from the scene.
CHP said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the accident.
The crash is under investigation.
