Long Beach, California (July 20, 2021) – A motorist was hit and killed by a vehicle shortly after being involved in a separate crash Tuesday night in Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly accident happened at around 8:30 p.m. on the southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway at Lakewood Boulevard.

The CHP said a vehicle was traveling on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, it crashed into the center median. The impact caused the car to overturn and burst into flames.

Following the crash, a person reportedly got out of the vehicle and tried to run across the freeway. The person was then hit by another vehicle.

The victim, whose name has not been disclosed pending family notification, was declared dead at the scene.

A SigAlert was issued, blocking the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation.
