Bakersfield, California (June 17, 2021) – Two people were killed and four others were injured  Wednesday morning in a car collision in Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The tragic wreck occurred just after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, on Interstate 5, just south of Highway 43.

CHP said a 2003 GMC, driven by a 51-year-old Modesto man, was heading southbound on Interstate 5 at approximately 70 miles per hour when it developed a right rear tire tread separation, causing the driver to make an unsafe turning movement.

The GMC reportedly rolled several times in the median area of the interstate.

As the GMC was overturning, the driver and his left back passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The passenger landed in the northbound No. 2 lane of Interstate 5, where he was struck by a northbound 2021 Toyota that was also going at 70 mph.

The GMC driver and the passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the GMC were transported to Kern Medical in unknown conditions.

The Toyota driver, a 46-year-old man, and his passenger sustained minor injuries but sought their own treatment. Both were from Santa Clara.

The names of the deceased victims and the injured parties have not been released.

No further details regarding the crash were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
