Woodland, California (June 22, 2019) 34-year-old Shane Michael Carlyle of Woodland has been arrested after a high-speed car crash that killed a young boy in the area of Woodland, according to a local news source report.

The crash occurred at around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, on Interstate 5 Freeway near County Road 22.

As per the report, Carlyle was driving a 2006 BMW at a high rate of speed northbound on the roadway when he rear-ended a 2004 Nissan pickup truck driven by 29-year-old Luis Figueroa of Woodland. The impact sent the pickup truck down an embankment where it overturned and rested in a field.

Five persons occupying the pickup were taken to the UC Davis Medical Center, where the 6-year-old boy died from his injuries. Three other kids identified as girls ages 6, 7 and 10, also of Woodland were hospitalized with severe injuries. A 33-year-old woman who was in the pickup was transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital with significant injuries as well.

29-year-old Luis Figueroa of Woodland, the pickup driver, suffered moderate injuries.

The BMW driver was transported to Kaiser Vacaville for treatment of minor wounds. Carlyle was later arrested and booked into the Yolo County Jail on Wednesday night with a bail set at $80,000.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Yolo Superior Court on charges including driving under the influence causing injury, vehicular manslaughter, and violation of probation.

Every year, several traffic accidents are reported in California. Unfortunately, accidents result in many fatalities and even more injuries. The causes of these traffic accidents range from distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, bad weather, wrong-way driving and failure to observe traffic laws. It is evident that negligence on the part of motorists is the leading cause of these accidents.

Dangers of Driving While Drunk

Drugs and alcohol contribute to many accidents on US roadways each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one million motor vehicle operators were taken into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The statistics show that drugs play a role in approximately 16%  of motor vehicle accidents while the proportion of fatal crashes involving alcohol is above 25%. Every day, about 29 people die in the US in vehicle accidents involving intoxicated drivers.

It is almost obvious that driving while intoxicated is irresponsible and could be deadly both to the involved drivers and other road-users. Intoxicated drivers tend to be overconfident and usually make impaired judgments. A drunk driver who causes harm to others will no doubt be faced with stiff penalties.

DUI Motor Vehicle Liability

Liability depends on whose actions led to an accident. If a person is injured in a crash involving a DUI driver, they may have the right to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, lost earning capacity, and pain and suffering. If the crash is fatal, the family of the victim can pursue compensation by filing a wrongful death claim in accordance with the Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. With the help of an experienced wrongful death lawyer, the family will have a better chance of proving fault and getting the justice deserved.
