San Jose, California (May 12, 2019) – The teenager who was killed early Saturday morning in a head-on crash in San Jose has been identified as Armando Canales,16, a well-loved Fremont high school student, according to authorities.

The deadly crash happened at about 2:11 a.m. Saturday, May 11 on Highway 17, just south of Redwood Estates.

Authorities said Ashley Marie Oliver, 28, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes on Highway 17 when her Chrysler minivan collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla that was traveling southbound near Summit Road.

Canales, who was sitting in the back seat of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers and the driver, all teenage girls, were transported to a local hospital with major injuries. A fourth passenger, a teenage boy, sustained minor injuries.

Oliver was also taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released. She was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail North on tentative charges of felony drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter.

The crash remains under investigation.
