CHP Officer, 1 Civilian Hurt in Corte Madera Car Crash on Tamalpais Drive near Highway 101

Corte Madera, California (May 10, 2019) – A California Highway Patrol officer and a civilian were injured Thursday evening in a traffic accident in Corte Madera, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 4:35 p.m. Thursday, May 9 on Tamalpais Drive near Highway 101.

As per the CHP report, the officer was heading westbound on Tamalpais Drive when she heard honking to the back of her patrol vehicle. She observed a Toyota Echo through her side mirror and could see it had veered across the solid double yellow lines and partially into the eastbound lane of Tamalpais Drive.

The officer then observed the Toyota again veered into the eastbound lane and sideswiped another car. Both the Toyota and the other vehicle continued without stopping.

According to the CHP report, the officer activated her vehicle’s overhead lights and accelerated in an attempt to position her car for a U-turn. The officer made a U-turn and blocked eastbound traffic on Tamalpais Drive in an attempt to avoid another collision with eastbound traffic.

As the Toyota approached the patrol vehicle, the officer could see the driver appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency. The officer moved her patrol vehicle farther into the number two lane of eastbound Tamalpais Drive in an attempt to prevent a head-on collision between the Toyota and another car.

The Toyota then hit the left rear of the patrol vehicle directly behind the driver’s door. That impact caused the Toyota to continue westbound on Tamalpais Drive. The officer exited the patrol vehicle after seeing that the Toyota was not stopping, and ran in an attempt to stop the Toyota. Due to Toyota’s slow speed, the officer was able to catch the car and open the driver’s side door. The officer reached into the Toyota, applied the brakes and put the vehicle in park before any other vehicles were involved.
