San Mateo County, California (April 22, 2019) – The San Mateo County coroner’s office has identified the pilot who was killed Sunday evening in a hang gliding accident near Pacifica as Christopher Carrillo, 44, of San Francisco.

The incident happened at around 4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21 off the coast of Pacifica near Devil’s Slide on Highway 1.

The CHP report showed that Carrillo had to make an emergency landing in the Pacific ocean and crashed.

Authorities said Carrillo unhooked himself from the glider but was unable to make it ashore due to heavy surf and coastal cliffs.

Pilot Dies in San Mateo County Hang Gliding Accident Sunday, April 21

Emergency crews responded to perform rescue operations at the scene.  The rescue teams located Carrillo approximately an eighth of a mile south of where he landed.

Carrillo was pulled from the water unconscious and not breathing and was transported to paramedics waiting on a nearby bluff. He was declared dead at 5:29 p.m.

The authorities are investigating the incident.
