Merced, California (April 11, 2019) – A woman was hospitalized Thursday evening after a traffic collision in Merced, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash occurred at around 5:55 p.m. on Highway 59 near Gerard Avenue.

According to the CHP, Candelaria Hernandez, 45, of Merced, was driving her 2006 Nissan Altima eastbound on Gerard Avenue when she stopped at the red light at Highway 59.

For an as of yet to be determined reason, Hernandez failed to yield the right-of-way to a southbound 2013 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by Jushawn Davis, 45, of Gilroy.  The big rig then hit the driver’s side of the Nissan.

Hernandez was unconscious and was rushed to a local area hospital. Her condition was not immediately disclosed.

Davis was unhurt in the accident.

The crash caused the closure of one lane of the highway.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the collision. The crash remains under investigation.
