San Diego, CA: Suspected DUI Fatal Crash on State Route 163 near Quince Street

San Diego, California (March 24, 2019) – A 40-year-old man was killed and three others injured in a suspected DUI two-car accident in Balboa Park early Saturday morning, according to a local news source.

The crash took place at about 2:30 a.m. March 23, on State Route 163, just south of the Quince Street overpass.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a white Mazda sedan, which was a Lyft vehicle,  was hit from behind by a 2016 Lexus sedan on the southbound lanes of State Route 163.

The impact of the crash pushed both vehicles off the highway. Both cars rolled down an embankment into a drainage ditch.

The CHP said a rear-seat passenger in the Mazda, identified as a 40-year-old San Francisco man, was stuck in the wreckage and had to be ejected by the fire crews. The victim was declared dead at the scene.

A 33-year-old San Leandro man, who was the other rear passenger in the Mazda, was not wearing a safety belt and was thrown out of the vehicle by the impact. The man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

The 23-year-old Santee driver of the Lft vehicle was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center with moderate injuries.

The driver of the Lexus, a 21-year-old woman, was taken to  Scripps Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

The authorities suspect that the Lexus driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

The wreck is under investigation.
