Jose Alvarez Flores ID’d as Man Killed in West Covina Crash on 10 Freeway near Barranca Street

West Covina, California (March 21, 2019) – The man who was killed Sunday night in a traffic accident in West Covina has been identified as Jose Alvarez Flores, 89, of La Puente, according to authorities.
The deadly accident took place at around 9:50 p.m. Sunday, March 24 on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway, just west of Barranca Street.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Gerardo Alvarez, 57, also of La Puente, was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer at an unsafe speed for changing traffic conditions when he rear-ended a 2002 Nissan Altima.
The force of the impact caused the Ford to roll over and landed on its roof.

Flores, who was a passenger in the Ford, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Nissan driver sustained moderate injuries while Alvarez suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The CHP report showed that Alvarez was placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI.
Two lanes were shut down for around three hours as authorities investigated the accident.
