Merced, CA: Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Vehicle on Highway 99
26-Year-Old Woman Killed in Merced Pedestrian Accident on Highway 99 near Franklin Road

Merced, California (March 21, 2019) – A 26-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night in Merced, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly accident occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 on Highway 99, just south of Franklin Road.
The CHP said the woman was driving her car on Highway 99 and was pulled over by the CHP officers after the officer noticed the vehicle was unable to stay in its lane. The officer stopped the car and as soon as he talked to the woman, he could smell an odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.
The officer, who was traveling back to the office from training, returned to his patrol car. While the officer was going back to his car, the woman ran across the road through southbound lanes of traffic.

After initially making it across the road, the woman tried to run back across the southbound lanes of traffic and was struck by a vehicle that was traveling in the southbound.
The woman was declared deceased at the scene of the accident. Her name has not been released pending identification and notification of her relatives.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
