Samoa, California (March 6, 2019) – Three people were injured Tuesday evening in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 255 in Samoa, according to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol.

The wreck was reported to the CHP at around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 on the west span of the Samoa Bridges, just east of New Navy Base Road.

According to the CHP, Peter Vadakin, 32, of Eureka, was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound on Highway 255 when a Toyota Tacoma driven westbound by Peter Lusa, 49, of Eureka, swerved into the lane ahead of him.

Mr. Vadakin was able to avoid a direct collision with the Tacoma but did collide with a camper shell that fell from the Tacoma. A Volkswagen Beetle driven by Delores Preitas, 26, of Eureka, was traveling eastbound directly behind the Chevrolet pickup and collided head-on with the Tacoma.

Preitas was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with major injuries. Peter Lusa and his passenger, Jaxon Lusa, 12, sustained minor injuries.

Peter Lusa was placed under arrest for suspicion of impaired driving and taken to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of his injuries. While at the hospital, it was determined that Lusa may have suffered from a medical condition before the accident. He was released from custody so he could receive a medical evaluation.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the CHP Humboldt Area. Anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to call the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981.
