Phia Vang Killed in Wrong-Way Car Crash on Highway 180 in Fresno

Fresno, California (February 5, 2019) – The Fresno Police Officer who was killed Monday evening in a multi-vehicle collision that also left a wrong-way driver dead in Fresno has been identified as Phia Vang, 48,a 26-year veteran of the Police Department, according to authorities.

The deadly collision happened at about 5:00 p.m. Monday, February 4 on Highway 180 near McCall Avenue.

As per the report, a driver in a 2014 Chevy Silverado pickup truck turned from DeWolf Avenue onto Highway 180 and drove east in the westbound lanes. The wrong-way motorist then crashed into five cars before crashing head-on into a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Vang.

Both Vang and the wrong-way driver were killed in the violent collision. The two were the only occupants of their vehicles and were wearing their seatbelts.

Officials said three to four occupants of the other cars suffered minor to moderate injuries as a result of the collision. They were treated at the scene and transported to the hospital for further aid.

Traffic was diverted n Westbound Highway 180 for several hours while investigators worked at the scene.

An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is ongoing.
