Long Beach, California (January 18, 2019) – The authorities have identified an elderly woman who died in the three-vehicle collision that happened early Tuesday morning in Long Beach.

Maxine Nowell, 82, of Compton was killed in the wreck that took place at about 12:20 a.m. January 15, on the 91 Freeway, just east of Atlantic Avenue.

The CHP said Nowell was driving a Honda Civic westbound on the 91 Freeway when she crashed into a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that slowed down due to running out of gas.

The force of the impact caused the Honda to spin and ended up in the left lane, blocking traffic. A man operating a Toyota Highlander didn’t see the Honda and slammed into it.

Nowell died in the crash.

The Toyota driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital while the operator of the pickup truck suffered severe head trauma.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered factors in the collision.

The CHP is working to find out the cause of the crash.
