Mario Figueroa Injured in Fatal Crash on Highway 43 in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, California (July 9, 2021) – Mario Figueroa, 61, of Bakersfield, was seriously injured early Thursday morning in a deadly crash involving two semi-trucks in southwest Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The tragic accident occurred at about 5:10 a.m. on Highway 43, just north of Panama Lane and south of Munzer Road.

The CHP said a 42-year-old man of Laton, Fresno County, was driving a 1990 International southbound on Highway 43 at approximately 45 mph when, for an unknown reason, the International drifted off the west side of the road.

The driver then turned back to the left, overcorrected, and the truck traveled directly into the path of a Peterbilt, driven by Figueroa, who was heading northbound. Both trucks eventually collided.

The impact caused the International to slid on its side down the roadway and then caught fire. The Peterbilt veered off the other side of the road and came to a stop in an orchard.

The crash prompted the officers to close Highway 43 in both directions for several hours.

No further details about the crash were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
