Santa Barbara, California (June 25, 2021) – A pedestrian suffered major injuries when he was struck by a train near Santa Barbara Zoo on Thursday morning.

According to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, the accident was reported just before 5:30 p.m. June 24 near Ninos Drive.

Authorities said the pedestrian was on the tracks when he heard the train and tried to jump off.

The northbound freight train, however, struck the pedestrian.

Authorities said the pedestrian was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

The northbound Amtrak Pacific Starliner train was delayed following the collision.

The Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating the incident.
