Tehachapi, California (June 11, 2021) – Manuel Gutierrez of Upland has been identified as the driver who was arrested after a police chase ended in a deadly collision in Tehachapi on Sunday night, according to the authorities.

The collision happened at around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, June 6, on Highway 58 near Broome Road.

Authorities said a CHP officer attempted to pull over Gutierrez in the Barstow area for a traffic violation but he failed to stop and fled from the area.

The authorities pursued Gutierrez into Tehachapi, where left Highway 58 at Tehachapi Boulevard and went through surface roads. He then re-entered Highway 58 at Highway 202 and drove his Chevrolet Tahoe westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

Shortly after, the Chevrolet collided head-on with an oncoming 2010 Nissan Murano driven by a 63-year-old man.

A passenger in the Nissan, Sheree Lee Fishgold, 62, of Tehachapi, was killed in the crash. 

Both drivers were hospitalized with major injuries. 

After treatment, Gutierrez will be booked into jail following the incident, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing.
