Merced, California (May 24, 2021) – Authorities are investigating a Sunday night traffic accident that killed a 40-year-old Ceres man and left three other parties injured in Merced.

The deadly three-vehicle crash occurred just before 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at the intersection of Yosemite Avenue and Lake Road near UC Merced.

According to CHP, the Ceres man was traveling south on Lake Road in a 2001 Honda when he failed to stop and collided with the rear of a 2014 Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old Rita Ceja of Merced.

Ceja was reportedly slowing and preparing to stop behind a 2018 Dodge Durango driven by Melanie Graham of Carl Junction when the collision. 

The crash impact caused the 2014 Honda to collide with the rear of the Dodge.

The Ceres man was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Mercy Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Ceja and her two passengers, a 40-year-old male, and an 11-year-old female, were transported to Mercy Medical Center with minor injuries.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected of having played a role in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.
