Alameda, California (March 27, 2021) – Two people were injured after a suspected DUI driver crashed into an outdoor dining area Thursday night in Alameda, according to a local news source.

At around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, March 25, authorities received a report about the accident at La Penca Azul, a Mexican restaurant located in the 1440 block of Park Street.

According to the authorities, a vehicle was heading northbound on Park Street and stopped for the posted stop sign at Santa Clara Avenue when it was struck from behind by a Nissan SUV.

The Nissan then turned onto Santa Clara Avenue and crashed into the outdoor dining parklet of the La Penca Azul.

Medical personnel responded to the scene and transported two diners of the Mexican restaurant to nearby hospitals with minor and non-life-threatening injuries. The names of the victims and their condition were not immediately disclosed.

None of the occupants of the SUV was injured.

Authorities later determined that the SUV driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The driver was ultimately arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment.

The crash remains under investigation.
