Lake Mendocino, California (February 6, 2021) – Walter W. Cupp, 57, of Potter Valley, has been identified as the man who was killed in a Friday morning semi-truck accident that left a 23-year-old Clearlake Oaks man injured in Lake Mendocino, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

The deadly accident happened at about 6:50 p.m., February 5, on Highway 20 just west of Marina Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2006 Toyota, driven by Cupp, was headed westbound on the highway when it drifted over the double yellow lines and collided with an eastbound 2014 Peterbilt semi-truck pulling a trailer.

Following the collision, the Cupp’s Toyota went down the hillside before coming to a stop, the officials said.

Sadly, Cupp was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 23-year-old Clearlake Oaks man sustained moderate injuries in the accident. He was the driver of the Toyota.

Intoxication was not suspected of having played a role in the accident.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
