Brayan Castro-Romero and Maela Garcia Killed in Los Banos Car Crash at Almond Drive and Ortigalita Road

Los Banos, California (January 6, 2021) – The Merced County Coroner’s Office have identified the two people who were killed Saturday morning in a traffic crash in Los Banos as Brayan Castro-Romero, 21, and Maela Garcia, 20, both of Los Banos.
At around 9:35 a.m. Saturday, January 2, emergency personnel responded to the area of Almond Drive and Ortigalita Road for a report of a car accident.
The California Highway Patrol said a 2001 Toyota was heading westbound on Almond Drive when, for undetermined reasons, it swerved to the right and crashed into a metal guardrail.
The vehicle then veered off the roadway and submerged into the Delta-Mendota Canal.
First responders arrived at the scene and found their bodies a mile away from the vehicle in the canal. It was not immediately clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
No further details about the crash were immediately provided.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
