El Nido, California (December 14, 2020) – Authorities are investigating a Saturday evening traffic accident that killed a 58-year-old man and left four others injured near El Nido in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred at about 6:36 p.m., on December 12, on Sandy Mush Road and Highway 59.

According to the CHP, the 58-year-old man was driving his 2000 Chevy Blazer eastbound on Sandy Mush Road towards Highway 59 when it failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The Ford, driven by a 40-year-old man, was headed southbound on Highway 59. He had the right of way, the officials said.

As a result of the collision, the Chevy reportedly caught fire.

Sadly, the 58-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four people in the Ford were injured. The driver was taken to a Modesto hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

A 37-year-old woman in the front passenger seat also suffered minor to moderate injuries. 

The other two parties, aged 15 and 13, were hospitalized in the Modesto area with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old man, who was the front passenger seat passenger in the Chevy, was not injured in the accident.

It was not clear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.
