Merced County, California (August 5, 2020) – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle early Wednesday morning on Highway 99 in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly accident happened at about 12:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway between Sultana Drive and Westside Boulevard.

The CHP said the woman was running across the northbound lanes of the highway when she was hit by a Toyota.

Investigators determined that the woman had been traveling southbound on Highway 99 in another vehicle with a man when they stopped on the side of the highway.

For undetermined reasons, the woman exited the vehicle and ran across the road.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending notification of family.

The Toyota driver remained at the scene and moved the victim to the median of the highway while waiting for police.

Authorities found that the driver of the Toyota was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident happened.

No further details about the crash were immediately provided.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
