Lewiston, California (June 18, 2020) – A head-on collision in Lewiston left three people injured Friday afternoon, according to authorities.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, the accident happened at around 4:41 p.m. June 12 on Highway 299, just east of Trinity Dam Boulevard.
As per the CHP report, a 2011 Acura MDX, driven by Cantero, was heading westbound on Highway 299 when it came to a turn in the roadway.
Authorities said Cantero was not able to safely negotiate a turn in the roadway due to the unsafe speed for the wet roadway and the rain condition. The Acura drifted into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with a 2000 Ford F-350 that was traveling eastbound on Highway 299.
Firefighters along the paramedics responded to the scene and extricated Cantero who was trapped in her vehicle. Her child was properly restrained in a child safety seat in the rear passenger seating position.
Cantero was transported by Trinity County Life Support to Mercy Medical Center with major injuries. Her 1-year-old baby was not injured in the crash.
The driver of the Ford, James Dean, 55, and his passenger, Jesse Ortega, 40, both of White City, Oregon, were also transported by Trinity County Life Support to Mercy Medical Center with moderate injuries. All parties were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The highway was blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.
