Sacramento, California (June 7, 2020) – Authorities have identified the woman who died in an alleged DUI crash last week Sunday on a freeway in Sacramento as Thelma Soto Barrios, 30, of Rancho Cordova.

The fatal crash happened at around 2:25 a.m. May 31 on northbound Highway 99 near 12th Avenue, according to the authorities.

The California Highway Patrol said a Kia Niro was heading northbound on Highway 99 while a speeding Toyota Tundra was approaching from behind.

The Tundra then rear-ended the Kia while moving from the number 3 lane to the number 2 lane. The Kia caught fire after the impact.

Barrios, who was riding as a passenger in the Kia, was trapped in the burning vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The Kia driver was able to get out of the car and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with severe burn injuries.

The driver of the Tundra, Edgar Mayorga of Sacramento, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.

The accident remains under investigation.
