Tigran Garabedyan ID’d as Pilot Killed in Orcutt Plane Crash at Ralph Dunlap Elementary School
Orcutt, California (May 22, 2020) – Authorities have identified the pilot who died in a plane crash Wednesday morning in Orcutt as Tigran Garabedyan, 38, of Burbank.
The fatal plane accident, which was reported at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, happened at Ralph Dunlap Elementary School, which is located in the 1220 block of Oak Knoll Road.
According to authorities, a Cirrus SR20 single-engine aircraft had departed Van Nuys Airport at about 9:45 a.m. The plane was en route to the Santa Maria Public Airport when, for reasons still under investigation, it crashed into the school’s basketball courts and burst into flames.
Authorities said the plane, which is registered in Newport Beach, was approaching the airport when it crashed.
Garabedyan, who was the sole occupant of the plane, was killed in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
