Bakersfield, California (May 21, 2020) – According to authorities, one person was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Thursday morning in Bakersfield.

At about 2:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to the deadly crash at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Niles Street, near East Bakersfield High School.

The police said a Honda Civic, driven by Ashley Garness, 22, allegedly ran a red light at the intersection and collided with a Volvo C70 and a Nissan Sentra.

Garness’s passenger, who was en route to a hospital before the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garness sustained moderate injuries from the crash and was arrested for DUI.

The Volvo driver sustained minor injuries.

The Nissan driver continued driving. 

Mt. Vernon Avenue between Niles and Oregon Streets was closed for an unknown period following the accident.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
