16-Year-Old Boy Dies, 4 Hospitalized after Highway 85 Ramp Crash near Cupertino in Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County, California (November 26, 2019) – A 16-year-old boy was killed and four other people were injured Tuesday morning in a traffic accident involving two vehicles on a ramp from Highway 85 near Cupertino in Santa Clara County, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash happened shortly before 11:00 a.m. on the transition ramp from southbound state Highway 85 to southbound Interstate Highway 280.
As per the CHP report, a 42-year-old man was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla when he passed a 1999 Ford F-Series dump truck and lost control of the vehicle.
The Toyota then drifted off the road onto the right shoulder and slammed into a tree. After crashing into the tree, the Toyota veered back into traffic, spun out and collided with the Ford.
The CHP said the Toyota came to a stop in the roadway, partially blocking traffic and partially on the dirt embankment shoulder while the driver of the Ford pulled off to the left shoulder.
Fatal Crash on Highway 85 Ramp near Cupertino
The 16-year-old boy, who was sitting the rear seat of the Toyota, was ejected from the car upon the impact. He was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 12:15 p.m.
The driver of the Toyota and a 46-year-old woman in the front passenger seat were transported to a hospital with minor injuries. Two other juveniles in the rear seat were also hospitalized with minor injuries.
Northbound and southbound ramps from Highway 85 were shut down for several hours following the crash. The road was reopened as of mid-afternoon.
The accident remains under investigation.
