Driver and Passenger Injured in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County, California (October 24, 2019) – Two men were hospitalized after a traffic collision involving a wrong-way driver Wednesday night in Santa Cruz County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at about 11:35 p.m. on Highway 1 near Vista Point.

The report by the CHP said a 30-year-old man was traveling the wrong way on southbound Highway 1 at a high rate of speed.

The wrong way car collided head-on with a Ford Mustang traveling southbound on the highway.

The Mustang was occupied by a man from Palo Alto and a man from Watsonville. The two occupants sustained major injuries and were transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment.

The wrong-way driver was taken to Watsonville Hospital, where he died of his injuries. His two passengers, a 27-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old woman, both from Greenfield, were taken to Natividad Medical Center with major injuries.

Authorities said alcohol or drugs may be a factor in the collision.
