Santa Cruz County, California (October 24, 2019) – A man died, and four others were hospitalized after a wrong-way collision that took place Wednesday night in Santa Cruz County, a local news source reported.

The accident took place at about 11:35 p.m. on Highway 1 near Vista Point.

As per the article, the California Highway Patrol said a 30-year-old man was driving northbound in the southbound lanes while speeding.

At the same time, a man from Palo Alto and another from Watsonville were traveling southbound on the highway in a Ford Mustang.

Authorities said the driver of the Mustang was unable to avoid the wrong-way car and ended up colliding head-on with that vehicle.

The driver of the wrong-way car was transported to Watsonville Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two passengers in that car, a 27-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman, both from Greenfield, were transported to Natividad Medical Center with major injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver and passenger in the Mustang sustained major injuries. They were taken to Valley Medical Center in San Jose.

Authorities closed southbound Highway 1 for about three hours as investigators worked the scene.

Officers said drugs or alcohol may be a factor in the accident.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
