Valley Center, California (August 5, 2019) – An 84-year-old woman was killed and two other people were seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision in Valley Center, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deadly accident happened shortly before 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3 on Valley Center Road between Cole Grade Road and Vesper Road.

According to the CHP, a 55-year-old Indio woman was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on Valley Center Road when she attempted to pass another car. While trying to pass the car, her vehicle collided head-on with a westbound Toyota Corolla.

The 84-year-old woman, who was sitting in the right-back seat of the Corolla, succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital. Her name has not been disclosed pending notification of family.

The driver of the Corolla, a 79-year-old Escondido man, and his second passenger, a 67-year-old woman sitting in the passenger seat, were transported to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries.

The driver of the Camry sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to Palomar Medical Center. A dog was in her vehicle when the collision occurred but was uninjured. The dog was taken to County of San Diego Department of Animal Services.

Witnesses told CHP officers that the Camry was traveling erratically prior to the collision. The driver of the Camry was arrested on suspicion of DUI and was expected to be booked into Vista Detention Facility upon her release from the hospital.

No further details were immediately provided.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
