Hemet, CA: Fatal Alleged DUI Crash on Florida Avenue and Kirby Street

Hemet, California (December 12, 2020) – Authorities are investigating a Saturday morning traffic accident that killed two people and left one other person injured in Hemet.

The deadly accident happened at about 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of Florida Avenue and Kirby Street.

According to the police, a BMW 535i sedan, driven by Jesus Rios, 33, of Downey, was headed eastbound on Florida Avenue towards Kirby Street when it failed to stop at the intersection.

Unfortunately, the BMW reportedly rear-ended a Honda Fit hatchback that had stopped at a red traffic signal.

The Honda’s driver, a 21-year-old Hemet woman, and her passenger sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

One other passenger in the Honda was seriously injured.

Rios, who was not injured, attempted to flee the scene on foot but was eventually arrested. Rios was booked into jail on suspicion of DUI, two counts of vehicular homicide and attempted hit-and-run.

The crash remains under investigation.
